About Conductix-Wampfler GmbH

The company is represented by 17 sister companies and a number of partner companies in almost all relevant industrialized countries.

The Challenge

An all-in-one tool for automated lifecycle management

Conductix-Wampfler was looking for a software solution to centralize and update the management of their Linux systems. Particularly important was the patch and release management of existing production systems, which are to be managed centrally through a uniform interface. The new solution is intended to replace the outdated repository mirrors with integrated package management. The focus was on supporting their SLES 12 and SLES 15 database servers. The existing infrastructure should be integrated into the new setup, for example DNS server management using Windows AD.

The Solution

Central server management with orcharhino

In search of a partner for an efficient automation solution for its server management, Conductix-Wampfler found ATIX AG, developer of orcharhino. With orcharhino, Conductix-Wampfler found a tool that decisively simplifies the management of its data centers. Processes like the setup of new servers, the configuration of managed systems or the patch and release management are automated. All connected servers can be monitored, managed and controlled with the help of orcharhino.

Generally, the configuration of the systems is standardized by Host Groups. For deviations, orcharhino offers full flexibility to override the configurations of individual systems. Thanks to preconfigured standard scenarios, setting up and configuring new systems with orcharhino is up to five times faster. With the help of ready-made job templates, both existing as well as new systems can be efficiently brought to a uniform state.

The Result

orcharhino enables automated and centralized patch and release management

The package management of orcharhino fulfills both the requirement for consistent and traceable package states and the direct management of SUSE operating systems. orcharhino has been successfully tested and is already in use.

The previous solution was quickly replaced by orcharhino: the existing repository mirrors were replaced by a stable and traceable package management using Content Views and Activation Keys. orcharhino allows rapid provisioning and immediate security errata roll outs. Multiple package levels for different systems can be maintained in parallel. orcharhino contains a job template to automatically upgrade SUSE Service Packs on SLES. Thus, orcharhino is used as the centeral interface for package management for systems in different lifecycles, to manage content from SUSE, as a unified interface for an overview of all servers, for errata management, and as a bonus: additional service pack upgrades.

Conductix-Wampfler uses the SCC Manager plug-in in particular to conveniently synchronize software repositories from SUSE into orcharhino and distribute them to managed systems in its own data center.
