Don’t forget the IT infrastructure

By Dr. Jonas Trüstedt, Product Manager for orcharhino @ATIX AG

In his guest article for eGovernment, Dr. Jonas Trüstedt explains why the location of a data center alone does not guarantee digital independence. Proprietary management platforms, closed interfaces, automation tools, or software supply chains can create long-term dependencies—even when applications are operated entirely on-premises or within Europe.
For public authorities in particular, this raises the question of how controllable, portable, and migratable their IT will remain in the long term. Among other things, this article examines potential lock-in effects associated with centralized platforms and EfA solutions and highlights the role that open standards, documented interfaces, reproducible infrastructure, and open source can play in providing greater flexibility.
